How do you decide the LMS for your business

So what is the best way to decide which learning platform (LMS) us best for your business?

It is easy to google search and find the first result you find. Or talk to the multitude of vendors out there who will offer a feature list to infinity and end up paying for a bloated piece of softare with features that you may never use.

There’s a simpler, easier way to evaluate a learning platform.

Start by identifying the audience, use cases and objectives for a platform

While deciding a learning platform, it is important to first decide the audience

  • Are you planning to train your employees, Sales teams, tech teams or provide customer training?

The next step is to make a clear and well defined list of objectives and use cases. A list would look like thing like this.

We need a platform to:

  • On-board new employees
  • Train our Sales teams
  • Train our new tech recruits on technologies that are pertinent for our company

The objectives include:

  • Provide an easy platform that encourages learning
  • Self certification of knowledge base of material that has been assigned to users
  • A platform that allows easy creation of content — for example every screenshare meeting is available as a video that could be used for training

Write down the features that you really need.

The best way to start is by writing down what you might need. Typically the list of features you would like is a good place to start, together with all the use cases that you’d like to support. This so that you don’t fall in the bloatware trap:

Here are some sample features for your reference.

  • Do you need the ability to create content through screen sharing and video recording i.e. train learners online and re-use the videos in other courses
  • How important is ease of use for you? Not all legacy platforms that exist today are simple to use and this is an important consideration.
  • Built in courses — Is it important for you to have built in courses? If so what subjects should the courses address?
  • Analytics — What is the level of analytics that you need and the granularity?
  • Content Delivery and Tracking: Includes Self-led, Instructor-led, web-based collaboration and tracking of completion for compliance

Evaluate

Make a list of LMS under consideration and all the features each of LMSes. Check off the features each one supports. Also consider pricing, support and the reviews of each of these platforms.

Always consider evaluating a trial version together with a follow up call with the customer success teams of each of the LMSes.

Make a score card and figure out what is the best for your company based on the results.

Making a decision

Armed with all of the above data points, it should be easy enough to make a decision on what best works for your company.

Avoid making mistakes

More likely than not we’ve seen organizations either not evaluating enough options or typically making a decision with legacy product that really fails to gain any adoption within the organization.

The only way to avoid such mistakes is to use data to drive your decisions. In your trial evaluate the number of hours that your team members have taken up to view the courses. Look at the time spent together with the number of people engaged with the platform.

It is also important to see how many reviews are positive, and how many look like false positive in order to weed out the bad actors.
